First Trimester Guide

IMG_7477.jpeg

I’m currently sitting in Starbucks at 38 weeks pregnant. My coffee is warm, my table is clear, and my playlist is top-notch. This is what mom dreams are made of, just saying. Well, minus the pregnant part, for me anyway.

My first pregnancy was hard. Health-wise everything was okay, except my blood pressure toward the end, but emotionally? I was so out of whack. So not myself. No one warned me that I just might not like being pregnant. And no one warned me that depression during pregnancy was even a thing. I was warned about after baby was born, but while she was still in the womb? That was unheard of apparently. I felt so completely alone and lost. Without any real reason for feeling that way.

I didn’t use oils or eat well or exercise or really take care of myself that first pregnancy. I was simply just trying to get by. Every day posed an interesting challenge as I got larger and larger and closer and closer to delivering this baby that I couldn’t imagine just loving automatically. I didn’t understand how I could love someone I had never met. But then that 7 pound, scrawny little thing came into this world and I didn’t know how I lived before her.

So, this time around has been very different. I know the love that’s coming. I know the unconditional joy I’ll feel when she’s finally laid on my chest. I expect the first few weeks to be hard. I know to get her checked for lip ties (story for another day) and take her to the chiropractor and not cut the umbilical cord so quickly and all those crunchy mama things. Emotionally, I’m better. And a huge part of that is how I’ve taken care of myself. Despite having a toddler while being pregnant, I’ve done a million times better at giving myself the rest I need, feeding myself with good food, and getting toxins out of my life as much as possible.

And because I have so many friends who are pregnant or want to have more babies or are thinking of having babies soon, I wanted to compile an all-encompassing list of goodies that I used throughout pregnancy, what I plan to bring with me to the hospital, and what I’ll use on our sweet baby girl when she’s here. The last two will probably be posts all on their own because this one is already long enough.

Let’s get to it!

First Trimester

The first 12 weeks of pregnancy are crucial. Not only are miscarriages prevalent, but the baby’s initial development is a big deal. Here are some things I did to help the first trimester:

Progessence Plus

Every morning, I used this incredible serum on my forearms. Progessence Plus is a natural progesterone supplement that provides the body with progesterone. Why is progesterone important? Well, it’s crucial if you want to get pregnant! Many women who can’t get pregnant or have miscarriages have extremely low progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone produced in the ovaries. This hormone has so many important functions, but a big one is how it thickens the line of the womb to prepare for a fertilized egg. If a pregnancy doesn’t occur, this is when a period happens. Progesterone also causes muscles not to contract and essentially reject the egg. ⁣

So, I used this serum every day during the first 12 weeks! Although I’ve never had a miscarriage, I obviously wanted to support my body however I could through natural remedies. Progessence Plus is also crucial for postpartum recovery, but we’ll get there.

Thieves Household Cleaner

This should be a no-brainer to those of you who’ve followed our wellness journey, but in case you’ve never heard… toxic chemicals lurk in every single one of our household products. Don’t believe me? Download the Think Dirty app and go scan what’s under your sink. You’ll be DISGUSTED by what is allowed in our household cleaners and even more so once you start doing some research into how those ingredients affect our bodies.

From what we wash our hands with, to what we wash our clothes in, what we spray on our yards, the soap we use to wash the dishes, the air fresheners we spray throughout the house, to even the toothpaste we use everyday...chemicals upon chemicals are found in these products and they have direct links to respiratory issues, hormone imbalances, cancer, and many other body issues.

Synthetic chemicals in these products mimic hormones and interfere with how they are to properly work. And because we are exposed to chemicals constantly from the beginning of life in utero to death, our hormones are constantly in a war, trying to do what they were designed to do despite chemicals interrupting their processes. You can imagine the chaos this causes: developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune disorders.

Here are a few common hormone disruptors:

✔ Bisphenol A (BPA) / found in plastic; some concern for effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children

✔ Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) / found in manufacturing consumer food packaging; human development concern

✔ Dioxin / formed during industrial processes when chlorine or bromine are burned in the presence of carbon and oxygen, most of American food supply is contaminated; can affect male sperm permanently and reproductive and immune systems

✔ Atrazine / used on majority of corn crops and found in drinking water; linked to breast tumors, delayed puberty and prostate inflammation in animals, and some research shows link to prostate cancer in humans

✔ Phthalates / found in plastic food containers, children’s toys, skincare products, and plastic wrap; linked to hormone changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects in the male reproductive system, obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities

SO! One easy way I got lots of toxic chemicals out of our home was use Thieves Household Cleaner. This one bottle is a concentrate and makes a million 16 ounce bottles of spray. We used the same bottle for over a year, y’all. It’s insane! Not only does it save money, but it literally saves our lives too. During the first trimester, I wanted my immune system and hormones to be as in-sync as possible and I know switching to Thieves products has been instrumental in this.

AromaEase

The first trimester comes with lots of excitement but also lots of sickness. With my first baby, I never struggled with nausea but with this girl? All through the first and second trimesters. I could hardly look at my phone or ride in the car those first few months. Enter in AromaEase.

Not only is this oil specifically designed for weak stomachs, but it’s gentle enough on you and the baby that you don’t have to worry. Anything that could help me keep food down or even desire to eat, I was willing to try. AromaEase also has incredible emotional support. It will knock an anxiety attack in a second. Experienced this first hand when I was flying a few months ago. I’ll never go without this oil in any other pregnancy!

Ningxia Red

You’re going to hear me talk about this one a ton throughout this series of posts. Every single person should be drinking Ningxia daily. It’s a whole fruit supplement made from wolf berries, and it has more antioxidants in it than you can even imagine. The benefits of drinking Ningxia while pregnant are endless!

With balanced ingredients, NingXia provides whole body nutrient dense wellness. It supports energy levels, overall health, digestion, appearance of skin, and protects the body from oxidative stress. The wolf berry is a fruit dense in protein. It is one of the highest whole food sources of potassium, zinc, fiber, and amino acids. All good things for mama and baby!

I drink about 2-4 ounces of Ningxia per day. Sometimes I make a fun afternoon drink with a seltzer water, Ningxia, and some vitality oils, but usually I just take a 2 ounce shot in the morning and another in the afternoon. I swear Ningxia helped keep my swelling under control and my weight throughout this entire pregnancy!

DiGize

Another product I will probably touch on throughout this blog series is DiGize. This oil is what made me a believer in oils in the first place! I cannot tell you how much it has changed the way I feel. Loaded with Ginger and Fennel, DiGize is a blend that will settle even the roughest of stomachs...mine included. After having a colonoscopy and being put on medication at the age of 21, I was determined to find a natural remedy for my stomach issues.

Insert DiGize.

Now during pregnancy? This one is amazing for the first few weeks when things are settled well. It’s also incredible to help you be able to eat pizza throughout your pregnancy without feeling fire rise in your chest...if you know what I mean! This oil comes in the starter kit too so it’s for sure one you should have on hand.

Okay! I think that’s enough for the first round of blog posts about pregnancy and oils. I’m going to keep trucking along for the second and third trimesters, and then get to things I took to the hospital (because I’m finishing this way later than when I started it… Baby Everett is here!) and then move on to what we’ve been using for her during the first few weeks of life.

I hope this information is helpful and gives you empowerment to use different and better products than what you find on the shelf. You know what I love to say… Know better, do better.

Especially for our babies.
